Man United defeat Liverpool

It was a 7 goal thriller when Manchester United faced off against Liverpool in the Emirate FA Cup quarter final at Old Trafford on Sunday, 17th March, 2024. The game ended in favor of Manchester United who pulled a great comeback twice before scoring the winner in the final minute of extra time to defeat their arch rival.

Scottish Midfielder, Scott McTominay, had put Manchester United in front early in the game after scoring in the 10th minute to give the host a 1 – 0 lead before late first half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah in the 44th and and 47th Minute respectively gave the visitors a half time win.

Manchester United came back stronger in the second half as Antony equalized for the host in the 87th minute to take the game into extra time. Harvey Elliot had put Liverpool in front in the extra time before a late equalizer from Rashford and a last minute winner from Amad Diallo gave Manchester United a 4 – 3 victory. This means Manchester United would face Coventry City in the Semi Final.

Here are 5 takeaways from the game;

Erik ten Hag Given a Chance to Turn His Season Around and Save His Job

It is safe to say Manchester United Manager, Erik ten Hag, has been under pressure to perform or been shown the exit door even though no one has been saying it, isn’t that what taking up the job at Manchester United is supposed to be like? In a club like Manchester United, you are expected to win trophies, maybe Erik ten Hag can remain the club’s manager next season if he can win the FA Cup after seeing off Liverpool to reach the semi final.

Manchester United Now A Favorite To Reach The FA Cup Final

Manchester United has easily become a favorite to reach the final as their semi final clash at Wembley Stadium would be against Championship side, Coventry City. With this kind of fixture at such a stage in the competition, one would not be totally wrong to begin to picture Manchester United in the final already. Although this is football and anything can happen.

Kobbie Mainoo Gives Gareth Southgate a Reason to Believe in His Abilities

18 year old Kobbie Mainoo has become a regular in Manchester United and with the absence of Casemiro, the young player stepped up and put up a show to give England coach, Gareth Southgate a reason to believe in his ability. Southgate had initially left out Mainoo from his English team, citing he has only had a handful of games, but has now decided to call him up after his performance against Liverpool.

Rashford Can Still Turn Up

Rashford has been out of form since the beginning of the season and has at some point lost his spot in the starting lineup and has often been criticized by fans for Manchester United poor performances. The forward who was Manchester United’s top scorer last season has managed only 8 goals and 6 assists from 35 games this season. In the game against Liverpool, Rashford showed what he is capable of and if he can put up that kind of performance game after game, then he would be able to turn his season around and help his team.

Antony Scores The Important Goals

It is safe to say Antony scores the important goals. Though he has only scored just a few goals since joining the Red Devils from Ajax, he has scored quite a number of important goals. The goal against Arsenal, the goal against Barcelona and now against Liverpool. Maybe he is not as bad as people have seen him.
