EPL Weekly Roundup – Arsenal’s Chance to Finally Win The EPL Title Atfter 20 Years
At the end of week 28 of the English Premier League, with a game in hand for Tottenham Hotspur, AFC Bournemouth, Luton Town and, Chelsea who have played 27 games each, Arsenal appears to be the ultimate winner in what seems to present them a chance to finally win the league title after 20 years.
Before taking a deeper dive into Arsenal’s chances, let us take a look at the results from the week.
Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle United; Chelsea comfortably defeated Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge by 3 goals to 2 on Monday night to put themselves in a position they may be able to put up a fight to get a place in Europe next season. Goals from Nicolas Jackson – 6′, Cole Palmer – 57′ and Mykhailo Mudryk – 76′ ensured that goals from Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy were not enough to earn any point for the visitors. Cheslea remains in 11th position at the close of the week with 39 points, and also with a game in hand.
Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City; This could be regarded as the game of the week, a super Sunday showdown between 2 contenders of the league title. It was an interesting game to watch, not void of controversies. Though the game ended in a 1 – 1 draw, it was a win for Arsenal whom a draw ensures they move to top of the league table on goal difference. John Stones put the visitors in front in the 23rd minute before a second half equalizer from Alexis Mac Allister from the spot in the 50th minute.
Brighton 1-0 Nottingham Forest; Brighton came back to winning ways at home against Nottingham forest after a disgraceful defeat to Roma in Europa League. A first half own-goal from young Irish defender, Andrew Abiola Omobamidele, in the 29th minute was enough to hand Brighton all 3 points.
West Ham 2-2 Burnley; It ended in a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium between West Ham United and Burnley on Sunday afternoon. Burnley continues to struggle in relegation zone at 19th position, with 14 points in 28 games, having lost 4 of their last 5 games. West Ham closed the week in 7th position with 43 points.
Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham; It was a convincing win for Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park. First half goals from James Maddison – 50′ and Brennan Johnson – 54′ and second half goals from Son Heung-Min – 91′ and Timo Werner – 95′ after a 66th minute red card for John McGinn ensure that Tottenham took all 3 points away from home and solidifies their position in the fight for a top 4 finish.
Bournemouth 2-2 Sheffield United; It ended in a 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium between AFC Bournamouth and Sheffield United. The host had a chance to go in front in the 14th minute from the spot but a miss from Dominic Solanke kept the game leveled before the visitors went 2 goals ahead with goals from Gustavo Hamer – 27′ and Jack Robinson – 64′. A 74 goal from Dango Ouattara and a late equalizer from Enes Unal was all Bournemouth needed to secure a point.
Crystal Palace 1-1 Luton Town; Nothing could separate Crystal Palace and Luton Town at Selhurst Park Stadium as the points were shared following a 1-1 draw. The host had gone in front with an 11′ opener from Jean-Philippe Mateta before a 96th minute equalizer from Cauley Woodrow. Luton Town remains in the relegation battle in 18th position with 21 points at the close of the week events.
Wolverhampton 2-1 Fulham; Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C defeated Fulham at home in a 2-1 victory. A second half goal from Rayan Ait-Nouri and an own-goal from Tom Cairney ensured that a 99th minute goal from Alex Iwobi was not enough to earn Fulham a point.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton; Manchester United came back to winning ways after consecutive defeats from Fulham and Manchester City the weeks before. 2 first half penalties from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, both won by Alejandro Gernacho who was arguably the best player on the pitch from both teams, were enough to hand Manchester United all 3 points at Old Trafford. Manchester United remain in 7th position on the table behind Tottenham with 43 points while Everton continues to fight to stay above the relegation zone.
Arsenal 2-1 Brentford FC; One could say Arsenal benefited more at the end of the week, not just for their victory against Brentford, but also for the result between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday evening. At the end of the week, Arsenal moved from 3rd to 1st position on the league table on goal difference. The game against Brentford was not an easy one as was anticipated after convincing results from the Gooners the weeks before. Arsenal went ahead in the 19th minute with a goal from Declan Rice before Yoane Wissa equalized just before the close of the first half. A late winner from Kai Havertz gave Arsenal all 3 points in the end.
Arsenal’s Chance at Winning the 2023/24 EPL Title;
With Arsenal currently sitting atop of the league table with 10 games to go in the season, one could begin to envisage Arsenal clinching the title come May. Though it won’t be an easy go with Liverpool and Manchester City sitting 1 and 2 points behind in 2nd and 3rd place respectively but one can also say that Arsenal has been quite decent in the previous weeks having convincingly won their last 8 fixtures bar Brentford whom they narrowly won. So YES, Arsenal has a huge chance.
